Hindi voice typing
Hindi voice typing on Mac.
To type Hindi by voice on a Mac, use the Dictation built into macOS, or Lipik: a free app that types mixed Hindi and English (Hinglish) in Roman letters in any app, and can write Hindi in Devanagari with a Whisper model.
Free and open source, for Macs with Apple silicon.
Three ways to type Hindi by voice
- Hinglish in Roman letters, with Lipik. Hold fn and talk. Lipik types "aaj ka din kaisa raha?" the way you'd type it in a chat. Needs macOS 26 or later.
- Hindi in Devanagari, with Lipik. Download a free Whisper model in Lipik's Settings and set the language to Hindi. Whisper models write Hindi in Devanagari.
- macOS Dictation. In System Settings, open Keyboard, then Dictation, click Edit next to Languages and add Hindi (India).
Lipik and macOS Dictation
Apple facts come from apple.com: the macOS feature availability page and the Mac User Guide (checked 29 Oct 2026).
| Question | Lipik | macOS Dictation |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, open source (MIT) | Free, built into macOS |
| Hindi | Whisper models write Hindi in Devanagari | Hindi (India) is one of its languages |
| Hinglish in Roman letters | Hinglish mode, on macOS 26 or later | With English (India), Hindi words come out in Roman letters |
| On your Mac | Yes, after one-time downloads | English (India) is in Apple's on-device list; Hindi (India) is not |
Lipik's Hinglish mode uses Apple's English (India) dictation together with its own English model, then cleans up the text: fillers removed, punctuation fixed, and the tone you set for each kind of app.
Set up Hinglish voice typing in Lipik
- Install Lipik and allow Microphone and Accessibility.
- Open Settings, go to Dictation, and check that Speech engine is Auto (Hinglish mode). It is on by default on macOS 26 and later.
- Check that Apple dictation language is English (India). If Apple's speech files aren't on your Mac yet, click Download.
More detail is on the Hinglish voice typing page.
Hindi and Hinglish in meetings
Lipik's meeting notes notice by themselves when a meeting mixes Hindi and English, and write the transcript in Roman letters. The first time, Lipik downloads its Hinglish speech model, about 2 GB. See Hinglish speech to text.
What needs the internet
After one-time model downloads, dictation works with Wi-Fi off. There is no account, and nothing you say leaves your Mac. The full list of what Lipik sends online is on the free dictation page.
Questions
Can I type Hindi by voice on a Mac for free?
Yes. macOS Dictation supports Hindi (India), and Lipik is a free, open-source app that types Hinglish in Roman letters in any app, or Hindi in Devanagari with a Whisper model.
Does Lipik type Hindi in Devanagari or Roman letters?
Both. Hinglish mode types Roman letters, the way most people write Hinglish in chats. With a Whisper model set to Hindi, Lipik writes Devanagari.
Does Hindi voice typing work offline in Lipik?
Yes, once the models are on your Mac. Speech to text runs on your Mac, and Lipik works with Wi-Fi off after the one-time downloads.
Which Macs does Lipik run on?
Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Hinglish mode in dictation needs macOS 26 or later.
Is Hinglish voice typing accurate?
It works, but it is in beta and makes more mistakes than English dictation. A Hindi word can come out with a different spelling, or a word can be missed.
